Season 2 of the Nissan Sentra Cup begins this weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
Canada's Nissan Sentra Cup motorsport series is back and promises a more competitive championship than ever, with new title contenders.
The Nissan Sentra Cup will kick off its second season this weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park located northeast of Toronto. Twenty drivers in near-production Nissan Sentras will be in action in the first of six events that make up the 2022 season.
Reigning Sentra Cup Champion, Quebec's Kevin King, is back in the series but for selected events only, opening the door to a bigger-than-ever list of title contenders. The 2022 season starts this weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) as part of the Victoria Day Weekend SpeedFest. We can expect to see some exciting battles for victory in the first two rounds of 2022, with the first race held this Saturday and the second one on Sunday.
Four drivers who raced the new Sentras last year - Valérie Limoges, Éric Chaput, Alexandre Fortin and Simon Charbonneau - are clear favourites in the title chase. Let’s not forget veteran Normand Boyer and several other competitors who raced in the Micra class last season such as Sylvain Ouellet (Micra class Champion last year), Nicolas Barrette, André Lapointe, Frédéric Chaput and others who are all eager to show their driving talent at the wheel of their Nissan Sentras.
Other competitors to watch for this season include brothers Justin and Élie Arseneau, NASCAR driver Simon Dion-Viens, Jean Audet and several rookies. The Micra class will also be in action this year with Marie-Soleil Labelle and rally driver Simon Vincent.
One of the most exciting things about the 2022 season is fans will be welcomed back to Canadian racing tracks. For the Nissan Sentra Cup, this means thousands of spectators are expected to gather at CTMP this weekend. This first event of the season also means the return of a very popular activity that started with the Nissan Micra Cup: the return of the track parades for Canadian Nissan Sentra owners!
On Saturday and Sunday, Nissan Sentra owners and pre-registered Ontario Z club members will take to the fabulous road course for a lunchtime parade. Fans will also have the chance to see in action the series’ new Safety Car this season, the all-new Nissan Z.
In the Nissan Sentra Cup paddock, spectators will also be able to virtually drive the new Nissan Z using the GranTurismo 7 platform in a simulator specially set-up by professional race driver and three-time Nissan Micra Cup Champion, Olivier Bédard.
Two races live on Facebook!
Two races on the programme, two Nissan parades, thousands of returning spectators and, to the delight of the public on location as well as those at home, both races will be broadcasted live and in full on the series' Facebook page (Nissan Sentra Cup). The start of the 2022 Nissan Sentra Cup season is more than promising!
The Cup drivers will take to the track six times during the weekend. On Friday May 20, there will be three free practice sessions (8:30 am, 11:50 am and 3:30 pm). On Saturday May 21, it's time for the serious stuff with the qualifying session held from 9:20 am to 9:50 am, followed by the first race of the event at 1:15 pm. The second race is scheduled to begin at 11:15 am, Sunday May 22. Both races will be 40-minute long.
