First Nissan Sentra Cup champions to be crowned this weekend!
- Once again, the titles will be awarded at Circuit Mont-Tremblant as the Fall Classic presents the final rounds for 2021 of the popular Canadian series -
This weekend's Fall Classic at the picturesque Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Québec will mark the conclusion of the first-ever season of the Nissan Sentra Cup. This season of the Canadian motorsport series has been an exciting one, with drivers showcasing their talent behind the wheel and highlighting the remarkable capabilities of the new Nissan Sentra race cars. The attractive, high-performance Sentras have made for an exciting season; setting the scene for the ultimate races of 2021 that will decide the overall titles as well as the champions of the three classes that are part of the series.
Although he currently trails Kevin King by 13 points in the drivers' point standings, Jesse Lazare still has a chance to become this year’s overall champion. If he captures two pole positions, wins both races and takes two fastest race laps, he will be the champion regardless of Kevin King's race results. But if King manages to clinch one or two pole positions or fastest laps, Lazare will have to hope that King doesn't finish better than third in order to be crowned.
Since the beginning of the season, the last races have been a tough fight until the last lap of the final round. Kevin King, the driver of the Gabriel Nissan / L&P Apparel driver Sentra is the clear favourite for the title, but let’s keep in mind that it’s Jesse Lazare, the driver of the Door Doctor / Motorsports In Action car who emerged the winner of the two Nissan Sentra Cup races at Circuit Mont-Tremblant last July.
Rookies Jesse Webb and Alexandre Fortin still have mathematical chances of taking the title at the end of the weekend. For Webb to be crowned, he’d have to win both races, earn both pole positions and fastest laps points while King would need to not finish in the top 21 on both occasions. This is in addition to Lazare not finishing in the top 15 either. As far as Alexandre Fortin is concerned, he could become the champion on the sole condition that neither King nor Lazare take the start of the races (therefore scoring no points) while he gets a perfect score, and Webb does not finish on the podium.
While Webb and Fortin's chances of taking the title are obviously slim, the British Columbian driver and his Québec rival are the two main candidates for the Rookie of the Year honours. Thirteen points separate them in the Rookie standings, with Webb in first place.
In the Senior class, the title will also be decided between a Québec driver, Éric Chaput, and a British Columbian rookie, Darren Graham. Both enjoyed a brilliant season, with a couple of Top six finishes, but Chaput is the clear favourite, as Graham needs to win both races overall with Chaput not finishing at all in order to earn the title in the Senior class.
Veteran Quebecer Sylvain Ouellet and young Ontario racer Nicholas Hornbostel will undergo a close fight for the title in the Micra category. Hornbostel, a rookie driver in the series this season is less experienced than Ouellet on the undulating and challenging Mont-Tremblant circuit located in the Laurentians, but as this season has been full of surprises, we can expect that the title will be decided in the last moments of the last race.
Due to the health restrictions that are in place, the 2021 Fall Classic will not be open to spectators, but Nissan Sentra Cup fans will be able to follow the weekend's activities on the series' social networks.
The Nissan Sentra Cup drivers will hit the track this Friday for two free practice sessions, leading up to qualifying for the first race on Saturday morning. The first, 40-minute race will start at 12:40 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the drivers will be qualifying for the second race early morning and the grand finale of the 2021 season will take place from 12:40 to 1:20 p.m.
