Nissan Sentra Cup will hold its first-ever event in Québec this weekend
- Will Ontario's Gavin Sanders be able to maintain the top spot in the point standings after the two races at Circuit Mont-Tremblant? -
The Nissan Sentra Cup will hold its second of six events this weekend during its first season on Canadian motorsport tracks. Following the success of the series' Ontario debut at Shannonville Motorsports Park in late June, the second event of the 2021 season will be held in Québec at the famous Circuit Mont-Tremblant located in the heart of the picturesque Laurentians.
Twenty-eight competitors have entered the 2021 Mont-Tremblant’s Summer Classic this year. For the Sentra racers, it will be their first experience on this fast and daunting track. During previous races held at Mont-Tremblant, the Nissan Micra Cup has always featured hotly contested, spectacular racing. Organizers predict that the more powerful, nimble and razor-sharp handling Sentras will produce even more exciting and intense competition.
"Everything went really well at the first event of the season and with 28 drivers entered for this second event, we can say that the 2021 season is well underway. That said, I can't wait to see the Sentras in action on a track as demanding as Mont-Tremblant, and I'm convinced that the battles will be even more intense," said series’ promoter Jacques Deshaies.
If there is one driver who is anticipated to perform outstandingly well at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, it is undoubtedly Ontario's Gavin Sanders in his Sanders Motorsports / SPI Racing Nissan Sentra, the winner of the first two races of the season and clear championship leader. At the season’s opener in Shannonville, Gavin raced on his favourite track, but will that change at Circuit Mont-Tremblant? Will he be able to withstand the pressure from reigning champion, Québec's Kevin King, in his Gabriel Nissan / L&P Apparel Sentra?
Sanders and King - the two stars of the opening event of the season - are not the only favourites for a win this weekend. Justin Di Benedetto, Valérie Limoges - one of the two female drivers competing in the full season series this year - and Éric Chaput are all very familiar with the Mont-Tremblant circuit, along with 2020 series’ runner-up Jesse Lazare. Rookies Simon Charbonneau, Owen Clarke, Alexandre Fortin and Kai Dalziel will also be the ones to watch.
The Nissan Sentra Cup is not just about Ontario and Québec drivers. Rookies Jesse Webb and Darren Graham from British Columbia will need to come to grips quickly with the Mont-Tremblant track but given their very promising performances at the season’s opener, they are expected to be very competitive again and score valuable points.
No less than six rookie drivers will be racing aboard their new Sentras this weekend at Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Seven others will be competing in the Micra class where the battle is also shaping up to be very intense, with many veterans trying to beat rookie driver Nicholas Hornbostel, who has been dominant in the opening two rounds at Shannonville.
Among the drivers entering the race world in 2021 this weekend is comedian and humorist, Michel Barrette, who will be competing alongside one of his sons, Nicolas. However, this is not the only father-and-son duo entered in this event as Gavin Sanders will be joined on track by his father Alan, who will be racing in the Micra class. Éric Chaput will also be racing with his son, Frédéric, who competed in his very first race event in the Micra class in Shannonville.
Although the Covid-19 situation is improving, the Mont-Tremblant’s Summer Classic will not permit spectators. However, fans of the series will be able to follow the action over the weekend through the Nissan Sentra Cup social networks.
Video clips and real-time results will be available to race fans and for all races, videos featuring highlights of each race will be broadcasted later in the year on the RDS sports network.
The Nissan Sentra Cup drivers will hit the track six times this weekend. Two free practice sessions are scheduled for Friday, July 23. Qualifying for the first race of the weekend will be held Saturday morning with a 40-minute race taking place in the early afternoon. Sunday will consist of a qualifying in the morning and the second race at 1 pm.
