Two titles to be won this weekend in the Nissan Micra Cup
- Marco Signoretti is the favourite for the overall title but could still be defeated by Kevin King; a promising weekend ahead with 25 entered drivers! -
This weekend, the Nissan Micra Cup will hold its final race of the 2019 season, as part of the Fall Classic at Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Two of the three titles are still to be won and will be decided between Marco Signoretti and Kevin King for the overall championship honours; and between Frédéric Bernier and Sylvain Ouellet in the Senior Class.
Having already clinched the Novice championship, Marco Signoretti, from Ontario, could also be declared overall champion not just in his first year racing in the Nissan Micra Cup but also in his first year racing cars in general. With a 42 point lead over Kevin King, from Québec, could be crowned champion on Saturday if he finishes ahead of his rival, with a victory that would net the driver 40 points. On the other end, if King wins the race on Saturday or finishes ahead of Signoretti, everything will come down to the results on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to these two title candidates, both races will provide an opportunity to see several drivers at or near the front of the pack, including Valérie Limoges, winner at the last Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, Taylor Near (Signoretti’s Paypal/Motorsports In Action teammate), Jake Exton and Austin Riley. Battling Signoretti for victory throughout the duration of the last race, Riley, a young driver with autism, has a chance of earning the first win of his career at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, thus making history in motorsport.
In Senior Class, a slight lead of 16 points separate Frédéric Bernier from Sylvain Ouellet. Even though Bernierhas been evolving in the Nissan Micra Cup since its inception in 2015, stands as favourite, he must still be wary of Ouellet’s performance, which has won the class for the last four races!
Again, a large crowd is expected as it is the most popular annual race weekend held at Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Other than these rivalries for the remaining titles in 2019, spectators will have an opportunity to see a starting grid with 25 Nissan Micra Cup drivers, at least four of whom will be making their series debut.
Proof that this is an unrelenting infatuation, these new drivers come from various backgrounds including Amyot Bachand, a journalist who normally competes in historic car series, now has the support of Belvédère Nissan, as he could not resist in participating in the Nissan Micra Cup this weekend. Among the other new drivers are Sacha Gagnon, co-owner of SH Karting, who is also well known in Québec for karting, Francis Bellerive and Ben Cooper. Cooper is a British driver and three-time World Champion in karting (2008, 2011 and 2012), who is currently living in Mont-Tremblant where he runs the Jim Russell Karting Academy. Driving a practically stock Nissan Micra race car will be without a doubt a very different experience than what he’s used to with karting cars.
In addition to the races, Canadian Nissan Micra and Nissan Z owners will have another opportunity to complete a parade lap of Circuit Mont-Tremblant on Saturday and Sunday’s noon hour. To participate, they must first register online (no later than September 25) at: https://www.micracup.com/eventregistration/
Nissan Micra Cup drivers will be on the track at least six times throughout the weekend, including two practice sessions on Friday, qualifications and a race on Saturday in addition to another qualification session and race on Sunday.
For the first time at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, the two races will be aired live on the series’ Facebook page and on its YouTube channel, Micra Cup TV. This will be a unique chance to watch the Nissan Micra Cup race from anywhere and an opportunity to see footage of the magnificent historic track, nestled in the heart of the Laurentians.
It will also be the last opportunity this season to see the exceptional LEAF NISMO RC, Nissan’s 100 per cent electric prototype vehicle, which will be on the track as the official pace car. The audience will be able to admire the car at the entrance of the Nissan Micra Cup paddocks between races.
