Duel between Kevin King and Marco Signoretti enters its final phases at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
- Nissan Micra Cup returns to Ontario this weekend where close battle for championship title continues between King and Signoretti -
The Nissan Micra Cup returns to Ontario this weekend for the second last race event of the season, which will be held at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park northeast of Toronto. Drivers of the Canadian Nissan Micra Cup series will share the programme with the Gander Outdoors Truck series, one of the most notable of the American NASCAR series. Thousands of fans are expected to attend the outing as it’s one of the most significant motorsport events held in Canada every year.
Returning to the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park track for the second time this season, there will once again be two races on the schedule, which will enable fans to witness either Kevin King or Marco Signoretti position themselves as the title favourite. Quebec driver Kevin King is the current championship leader and recent winner of the series’ 60th race at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières (GP3R). However, Signoretti, a young Nissan Micra Cup rookie from Ontario and new to closed cars racing, has demonstrated perseverance throughout the season and remains among the top contenders the title. Fans will witness if Signoretti, the PayPal/Motorsports In Action team driver, claims his first victory this weekend at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
With two pole positions and one victory this season, Valérie Limoges is currently third in the championship standings and would need to see top title contenders, King and Signoretti, perform poorly for her to join them at the top of the standings. Limoges is among this season’s favourites and made history in Trois-Rivières by becoming the first female Canadian driver to claim an overall victory in the GP3R’s 50-year history.
Frédéric Bernier will also be one to watch this weekend and currently leads the standings for the Senior Class, which is reserved for drivers 40 years of age and up. Bernier, currently fourth in the championship standings, is ahead of Ontarian Taylor Near, Signoretti’s teammate, and Quebeckers Sylvain Ouellet, Nicolas Barrette, and Éric Chaput. Chaput shares eighth position with Austin Riley, who is hoping to earn his second series podium at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park after earning his first at Calabogie Motorsports Park in June.
Both Nissan Micra Cup races, a 30-minute race on Saturday and 40-minute on Sunday, will surely provide plenty of entertainment for spectators this weekend. Additionally, fans on-site will have the opportunity to witness the LEAF NISMO RC on the track as the series pace vehicle and in the Nissan Micra Cup paddock, visit souvenir kiosks on location, and attend a driver autograph session on Sunday, August 25 at 1:30pm.
Canadian Nissan Micra and Z owners will also have the privilege of driving in a parade on the same track that once welcomed the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Canada and other international events. In order to take part, eligible owners must register online no later than Wednesday, August 21 at www.micracup.com/eventregistration/.
Nissan Micra Cup drivers will take to the track six times throughout the weekend, including two practice sessions on Friday, one qualifier and one race on Saturday, and another qualifier and the second race on Sunday.
Lastly, for all those that will not be attending the Nissan Micra Cup at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park this weekend, both races will air live on the series’ YouTube channel, Micra Cup TV, providing a unique chance to see the series drivers in action from afar.
